Imagine a line running 100 paces east. Then from the end of that line, plant a line 100 paces north, then 100 west, 98 south, 98 east, 96 north, 96 west, and so on. This makes a square spiral path 2 paces wide. How long is the path?

The total area of the spiral is 100 x 100 = 10,000 paces ^ 2.The path is 2 paces wide.10,000 / 2 = 5000 paces, the length of the path.
